From
the Executive Director... Why is this relevant
to you? Because communities all across Chicago are quickly changing and the
effects are far-reaching. The CHA has already completed thousands of new apartments
in mixed-income communities where high and moderate income Chicagoans live
side by side with public housing residents. The CHA is also rehabbing some
existing public housing sites and providing housing opportunities for families
in neighborhoods throughout the city through the Housing Choice Voucher Program
(formerly known as Section 8). You or someone you know likely lives near families
who receive federal housing assistance and everyone, no matter what their
income level, plays an important role in the strength of their community. For these new communities to truly be successful, low-income families must have access to education, job training and other opportunities that can help them move towards a better future. With this new direction, they can escape the cycle of poverty that has held them (and perhaps generations before them) back for so long. With this assistance, they can be good neighbors in these communities, good employees in their jobs, and good citizens of the city we all share. To make this possible, the CHA cannot work alone. It needs the help of major partners like Windows. A small percentage of our support comes from public funds, but we also must depend on private contributions and people like you who believe that change for the better is possible.
